A preliminary study by Mary Huang and other researchers at Stanford University has shown that seven weeks of acupuncture treatment reduced the severity of nighttime hot flushes by 28 percent, according to research published in the September issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility. The study involved 29 menopausal women who were suffering from at least seven hot flushes each day. All of the women were treated by acupuncture treatment, but only 12 received acupuncture specifically targeted at hot flushes. After nine treatments, the 12 women reported a significant decrease in the severity of the nighttime hot flushes. Mary Huang and her colleagues say the results call for the further study of acupuncture as an alternative treatment. The No. 1 choice for treating menopausal symptoms until recently was hormone replacement therapy, until studies showed HRT could increase the woman’s risk of heart disease or cancer. Researchers at Stanford University are planning further investigation into the use of acupuncture to treat hot flushes in menopausal women.
